Profile
Wimperis is a traditional figurative artist who paints plein air in oils or watercolors. Larger studio paintings are completed using plein air references, either at home in a Cornish studio or while traveling in a mobile studio. Inspiration is drawn from travel and the experience of visiting new places. Wimperis is particularly drawn to domestic subject matter, including complex interiors, markets, and gardens, and is a dedicated sketchbook keeper.
Born into a family with artistic roots dating back to 1650 on the Lizard, Cornwall, and extending as far as New Zealand, Wimperis showed an early passion for art.
At a young age, the call of the sea led to studying Fine Art at Falmouth School of Art, culminating in a degree in sculpture. This was followed by exhibitions with several galleries, including the Portal Gallery in London, as well as illustration work for the BBC and the National Trust.
Travel has been a central theme in Wimperis’s artistic journey, with painting trips spanning China, Russia, Israel, and Norway. Time was also spent living and teaching art in both Norway and France.
Upon returning to Cornwall, Wimperis established a mural company and worked as an illustrator while raising five children. Experience in the art world also includes working as a gallery manager.
Notably, Wimperis was the only English artist/animator to contribute to the film Loving Vincent. Additionally, Wimperis works with Artlook Software as Client Support and Artist Ambassador.
