Flowers from the Market celebrates the quiet poetry of everyday life — a still moment at a well-loved table where the sunlight drifts through an open doorway, falling across bowls, glasses, and a great earthen pot brimming with sunflowers. The warmth of ochre and gold is balanced by cool greens and soft shadows, creating a harmony of colour and atmosphere that feels both intimate and timeless.
Sarah Wimperis’s painting invites comparison with Pierre Bonnard and Édouard Vuillard, masters of the domestic interior bathed in light and memory. Like them, she transforms the ordinary into something tenderly observed and deeply felt. Her use of confident brushwork and rich, tactile colour echoes the sensuality of Henri Matisse, while the still-life arrangement and play of reflective surfaces recall the quiet compositions of Giorgio Morandi.
There is also a nod to Van Gogh in the sunflowers’ vigorous forms — bursting with vitality, yet rooted in stillness. Wimperis captures that same emotional generosity in paint: a sense that beauty lies in the familiar, in the afterglow of a meal, the scent of flowers from the market, and the joy of light filtering through a southern afternoon.
