Bedroom Chair

This small gouache study was painted from life, sitting quietly in the room and watching how the morning light moved across the chair and wall. I love how gouache allows me to work quickly and intuitively — it’s a wonderfully portable medium, perfect for capturing light and atmosphere while travelling or painting en plein air. The paint’s velvety opacity and fast-drying nature make it ideal for exploring colour relationships and composition before beginning a larger oil painting.

In this study, I wanted to catch that fleeting glow of light filtering through the leaves outside, the way it softens the edges of everything it touches — even the worn fabric of the chair seems to shimmer for a moment.
